The U.S. House voted 269-142 to invest in vital American services for veterans and children. This overwhelming bipartisan vote is just a few shy of the number needed to override President Bush’s threatened veto. But there’s still time to act! Contact your members of Congress today and urge them to oppose President Bush’s reckless veto threat.

On Tuesday, the United States Senate voted overwhelmingly to fund the vital programs and services that America needs, including job training for veterans, cancer research and Head Start. The chamber passed the Labor-Health and Human Services-Education bill by an overwhelming 75-19. The House overwhelmingly passed the measure last summer.
Now comes the showdown with President Bush, who has vowed to veto the bill. The President says he can’t find the money to invest here in America, even as he continues to spend countless billions in Iraq. The bills will be merged in the next few days and the House will vote soon. Sign the petition urging your member of Congress to invest in America.

Last week, President Bush denied millions of children doctor’s visits and medicine when he vetoed the State Children’s Health Insurance bill (SCHIP). Now a coalition of groups who support health care for needy kids is putting pressure on the House of Representatives to override the President’s heartless veto. If President Bush and Republican leaders can find hundreds of billions to spend on the Iraq War, surely they can afford a fraction of that to cover needy kids. The veto override vote is scheduled for the week of October 15. In the meantime, sign the ECAP petition to urge your member to stand with American kids by overriding the President’s SCHIP veto.

When Congress returns in September, the U.S. Senate will consider an important bill that funds vital services for regular Americans. The U.S. House overwhelmingly passed the Labor-HHS-Education bill in July. Now the Senate will act on the measure, which funds vital services such as Head Start, child care and job training.
ECAP is currently holding a number of events around the country to remind senators of just how important this bill is.

American families scored an amazing victory on July 19. Thanks to our hard work, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that begins to re-invest in America. The Labor-Health and Human Services-Education appropriations bill cleared the floor of the House with a solid majority, 276-140.
And the sweetest part about this victory? Fifty-three Republicans joined with us to increase our investment in vital services like child care, job training and Head Start – which means we are within striking distance of overturning President Bush’s threatened veto of this bill.
Why such a bipartisan vote? Because members of Congress listened to us. We called on dozens of specific members of Congress to vote for this bill over the past several weeks. And almost every one of them voted the right way. In particular, New York Rep. James Walsh not only supported the increased investment in the Labor-HHS-Education bill. He actually co-sponsored it.
Now it’s time to thank the lawmakers who voted our way, and spank those who did not. Click HERE to see how your representative voted. For the past two weeks, local advocates across the country have spoken out to urge their members of Congress to invest in America rather than throwing billions of tax dollars away in Iraq. From Illinois to New Jersey; from Connecticut to Michigan, communities have praised the increased investment in child care, Head Start and job training contained in the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill.
That bill comes to a vote on the House floor this week – and it’s time for one last push to make sure members of Congress vote for it. Call 1-888-460-0813 today and tell your representative to vote YES on the Labor-HHS-Education bill and to oppose President Bush’s threatened veto.

We are facing an emergency in the United States. Although we have new leadership in Congress poised to put vital programs for Americans in need ahead of tax breaks for the wealthy, we face another obstacle, a Presidential veto.

The FY 2008 budget resolution continues to move through the legislative process. In March, the U.S. Senate and House Representatives each passed their own versions of the resolution. Now, the differences in the two bills must be ironed out by a conference committee made up of a small group of Representatives and Senators.
