Last week, the U.S. House Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Subcommittee approved a FY 2008 spending bill that includes a $6.9 billion increase in programs that serve the needs of low and middle-income families. In particular, the bill helps make education more affordable and increases access to child care for the working poor. The House aims to pass this bill by July 4.
The Senate will consider its own version soon and aims to finish by the end of July. The Senate bill will likely include additional resources for similar priorities the House has identified - a positive first step after years of neglect.
So far, President Bush is vowing to veto the additional support for low and middle-income families.
