Renews Call on Congress to Reject President's Veto Threat

Washington, DC - Yesterday, President Bush nominated former Iowa Congressman and failed gubernatorial candidate Jim Nussle to take the place of outgoing OMB Director Robert Portman, who resigned yesterday. The following is a statement from ECAP spokesperson and USAction Senior Campaign Manager Marvin Silver.

We are truly disappointed in the president's choice of former Congressman Jim Nussle as OMB Director. In his tenure as chairman of the House Budget Committee, Nussle worked for more than a decade to give tax breaks to millionaires and corporate interests at the expense of working- and middle-class Americans - and helped, in the process, to turn a projected 10-year, $5.6 trillion budget surplus into a $2.6 trillion deficit. As OMB director, Jim Nussle will blindly follow the president down a dangerous fiscal path paved with the upside-down priorities that have already led to soaring budget deficits and cost his party its control of Congress.

The nomination of a man whose nickname is "Knuckles" for his stubborn and hotheaded demeanor only raises the stakes in our fight to fund critical human-needs programs. With a potential presidential veto looming, we are facing a real fight about America's funding priorities, and we'll hold each member of Congress accountable to step up and vote for much-needed funding for education, health care, housing and nutrition, and other critical needs. Each vote could decide the fate of millions of Americans who are struggling to make ends meet.
